Who knew getting organised could be so sexy?

After developing her very own strategy of tidying, the 'KonMari’ method, decluttering queen Marie Kondo has gained widespread recognition for her guides on the Japanese Art of Tidying. Even Kate Hudson is a fan.

Published in over 20 countries and listed last year as one of Time's most influential people, Marie's method has made her a tidying guru.

To celebrate the release of her new illustrated book, we decided to round up some of her top tidying tips to ensure a clutter free 2016.

1. You have to fully commit

Marie has not downplayed the fact that the KonMari method requires a lot of time and effort. Once you’ve made up your mind to try the method, you have to follow it as closely as possible.

2. Envision your ideal lifestyle

By doing this you are identifying the life you want to live and this should help clarify why you want to tidy in the first place.

3. Discard rather than store

Marie notes that a characteristic of people who don’t finish tidying up is that they store everything without actually chucking them. During the discarding process, any storage solutions should be considered temporary.

4. Don’t tidy by location, tidy by category

To get a grasp of the sheer volume of things you own, gather every categorised item, for example, every single piece of clothing in the house, into one spot. This allows you to see exactly just how much you have.

5. Follow the right order

Clothes, books, papers, miscellaneous and then sentimental items.

6. If it brings you joy, it is worth keeping

Think of the process as choosing what to keep rather than choosing what to discard. Only keep things that really bring you true joy.
