It’s 150 years since the birth of children’s author Beatrix Potter, and to tie in with International Women’s Day this March, Penguin will be using Lily Cole to voice the life and challenges Beatrix encountered.

Beatrix, who’s most famous character is Peter Rabbit, overcame personal rejection, academic humiliation and heartbreak (all during an era where women were often stopped from flourishing). But despite these set backs, the author went on to become a legend and earn a fortune. Beatrix was also an artist, botanist, conservationist and businesswomen (Peter is the world’s oldest licensed character).

During March, Lily will be working with Penguin to make Beatrix’s legacy relatable to the modern day woman. The #BEATRIX150 social media campaign, running alongside Women for Women, will also be using names across literature, the arts, fashion and entertainment world.

This will be the first of events Penguin are holding to bring together creative women from all different fields (apparently there’s going to be a luncheon hosted by ELLE's own food editors Jackson&Levine).

So let’s champion the modern-day Potters and celebrate the life of a woman who paved the way for women in both the business and creative fields today.

Happy Birthday Beatrix.
