It would be all too easy to think of Broad City as Girls 2.0 – it is, after all, a TV show about twenty-something best friends who live in New York, have dead-end jobs, and spend a lot of time hanging out and making each other laugh. The main characters also write, direct, and star in the series. But in fact Abbi and Ilana are so much funnier – and a lot weirder. The show follows the pair as they spend their days at dog weddings in Central Park, calling out sexists on the sidewalks of NYC, and going on shopping sprees at US home ware mecca Bed Bath and Beyond – oh, and did we mention Hillary Clinton makes cameo?

Originally conceived as a YouTube series in 2009, word spread fast on social media and Broad City was picked up and developed by Comedy Central, with Amy Poehler as executive producer. Now, as the pair have returned for for series three, it’s time to get in on the joke.

Meet Abbi Jacobson, 32, and Ilana Glazer, 28, the stars of Broad City and TV’s funniest BFFs…

ELLE: Can you describe each other in five words?

Abbi: Ilana is wild, streamlined, bare, intense and clever.

Ilana: OK, no pressure after that, but Abbi is smart, bold, surprising, sentimental, and huggable. Very huggable.

ELLE: Who was your first crush?

I: It was probably Will Smith. I remember being hooked on Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air and loving him in the show.

A: Elijah Wood. As a kid he was in a lot of films. I was so into him.

ELLE: And what’s your good mood song?

A: I’ve got a lot of them, but right now it’s Don’t Wait by Mapei. It’s just great, isn’t it?

I: Mine is Every Girl by Lil Wayne. He’s so optimistic that he can hook up with every girl. I know it could be seen as sexist, but I just see him as woman-loving.

ELLE: Where were you at midnight last night?

I: We were both asleep. We loooove sleep. And love early nights.

A: We had an early start today for filming, so we headed to bed. Not together.

ELLE: What book is by your bed?

I: Men Explain Things To Me by Rebecca Solnit (Haymarket Books).

A: We both received it from our agent, who is a massive power b*tch, who sent it to all her power b*tch clients – including us.

ELLE: What is your most overused word?

A: I say ‘like’ way too much.

I: Me too. And, like, the word ‘bah’.

ELLE: What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

A: Amy Poehler once told us, ‘Treat yourself like your own daughter.’

I: I think she meant be nicer to yourselves. Look for your inner child and cherish her. We try to do it every day.

ELLE: Finally what would your last meal be?

A: We’d both have bacon, eggs, cheese with pickles and fries. We’d need a full plate each.

I: The food would probably be the cause of death. We’d eat so much and then fall asleep, together forever.
