In case you’ve missed it an algorithm is coming… Perhaps as soon as tomorrow… And it’s going to change everything!

Except that it won't.

We spoke to Instagram to find out the truth and the good news is that it's not very dramatic at all.

As the digital rumour goes: Instagram will stop arranging all your pictures in chronological order and instead will start arranging them based on your behaviour. So people are worried that only certain images that you've shown a propensity for liking will appear in your feed and all the others will be hidden.

The world of Instagram has descended into a mild hysteria, with everyone from Kylie Jenner to our favourite fashion brands posting pictures for their followers to turn on post notifications, so your phone will bleep every time the account posts a photo so you won’t miss a single thing they do.

Except the problem with all of this is that the rumours are mostly completely untrue.

We contacted Instagram to get the actual low-down of what’s going on, and they told us; ‘There are still weeks, or even months, of testing to come before we roll this out more broadly. Currently the test groups are very small. We will let the community know before any changes are made.’

So it is definitely not going algorithmic tomorrow.

Soliciting our Instagram sources a bit further, it’s also worth noting that when the changes DO happen, your feed will order your posts differently, yes, but it won't send anyone into total obscurity.

Some pictures will appear at the top of your news feed, ordered according to a number of signals such as likes, comments, searches and so on, but then it will show you the rest of the posts too.

In short: don’t panic. Or at least, don't panic yet...
