Brad Pitt is under investigation for verbal and physical abuse of his children, according to multiple reports.

The Los Angeles Police Department and L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services are investigating an anonymous claim made against the actor following an incident on his private plane last Wednesday, a source told TMZ.

Pitt had allegedly been drinking prior to the incident, when he was "verbally abusive" and "physical" towards one of his children, a source told People. Angelina Jolie was said to be present at the time, which provoked her to file for divorce on Monday, the source added.

The LAPD's investigation is routine practice whenever a child abuse case is reported, and according to TMZ, Pitt is disputing the accusations against him.

"He takes the matter very seriously and says he did not commit any abuse of his children," a source told TMZ. "It's unfortunate that people involved are continuing to present him in the worst possible light."

Neither Pitt nor Jolie has commented on the reports. Jolie, who cited "irreconcilable differences," is seeking physical custody of the couple's six children.

Shortly after news broke on Tuesday of Jolie filing for divorce, her attorney issued a statement, saying, "This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time."

Hours later, Pitt issued his own statement, telling People: "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the wellbeing of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."
