Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver play two Jesuit missionaries in 17th-century Japan, risking their lives to find their spiritual mentor, played by Liam Neeson. Garfield's complete investment in the role was rumored to have created a rift between him and then-girlfriend Emma Stone when he was shooting in Taiwan in April 2015. Us Weekly reported then that Stone ended their relationship as "he'd been in a dark place for months, getting into his role [for Martin Scorsese's Silence]. He wasn't being the best partner," a source told the outlet.

These days, Stone and Garfield remain friendly—and just that. Stone was last seen on a London stroll with him in August. In an interview last month, she described Garfield as "someone I still love very much," though she is single.

Silence comes out December 23.
