Nicole Kidman has finally given an explanation for her distracting seal-style applauding that nearly stole the show from the Best Picture mix-up at The Oscars 2017 last month.

The actress was appearing on Kiss FM's Kyle & Jackie O Show when she confirmed what we, and host Kyle had suspected all along... She didn't want to damage her precious, precious jewels.

"It's because of the rings you idiots, like that's why she's clapping like that - she doesn't want to damage the jewels!" the radio host blurted.

The Big Little Lies star immediately replied: "Yes, yes! I'm so glad you clarified that because it was really awkward! I was like, 'Gosh, I really want to clap.

"I don't want to not be clapping, which would be worse right? Why isn't Nicole clapping? So therefore I'm clapping but it was really difficult because I had this huge ring on which was not my own but was absolutely gorgeous and I was terrified of damaging it!

"You nailed it Kyle!"

Kidman - who had been up for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Lion - also seem perplexed as to why her "seal clap" had received so much attention at the ceremony.

"It's like, is there not more important things to be focused on than the 'seal clap'?" she asked.

On the glittering night, the actress had been equally as shimmering in 119 carats worth of Harry Winston diamonds, including a13.58-carat pearl-shaped diamond ring set.

We totally get it now...

She also addressed the shocking Best Picture blunder, which saw guest presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway present the top award to La La La Land, instead of actual winners Moonlight.

Kidman added: "That was bizarre I have to say, I wasn't sure what was going on, no-one in the audience was, and then there was kind of some shuffling and envelopes and I'm thinking 'what's going on?' I thought someone wasn't well!

"And then I saw people's faces dropping - it was bizarre!"
