Australian Prime Minister said his nation's "heartfelt sympathies are with the victims".

Tributes have also been paid to Foreign Office Minister Tobias Ellwood, who has has been described as a"hero" after he was pictured giving first aid to one of the casualties on the scene. According to reports, the Conservative MP gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to the police officer in New Palace Yard.

Speaking to The Sun, Mr Ellwood, formerly an Army Captain who lost his brother in the 2002 Bali bombings, described the incident as a "huge tragedy".

"I tried to stem the flow of blood and give mouth to mouth while waiting for the medics to arrive but I think he had lost too much blood," he said. He had multiple wounds, under the arm and in the back. As I understand it the attacker has also died. I'm not allowed to say anything, I'll get into trouble. It's very sad."
