Karina Saifer Oliveira lived in Nova Andradina - a city about 500 miles from Sao Paulo - with her mother and stepfather.

A 15-year-old in her first year of high school, Karina intended to study law at university.

On the afternoon of November 7, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Not to her mother, Angela Saifer, anyway. But after failing to reach Karina via Whatsapp, Angela got home and found her daughter's body on the back porch.

'I wouldn't wish this on any mother,' she told Buzzfeed. 'We don't know what was going to happen in our lives. If I'd known...'

Her stepfather, however, said he knew that Karina was having a tough time at school. Aparecido Oliveira said she was tormented by rumours that her ex-boyfriend had posted explicit photographs of her online.

'Two months ago, she came to talk to me, saying that she was feeling like a trashy person because this had happened to her. I said it didn't have anything to do with her,' said Aparecido, 47. 'I only found out what had happened after the guy was no longer living in our town.'

When she was 14-years-old, Karina reportedly had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old boy. While police are reportedly investigating whether the photographs of Karin exist, she lives in a small town (of about 50,000 people) and rumours spread like wildfire throughout her school.

Additionally, her father explained that Karina was bullied for being biracial and teased about her appearance. 'After she died, we saw messages from students on her WhatsApp, hateful ones, from students teasing her about her hair because it was half-afro, because she used a hair straightener. They'd been sending them for over a year,' he said.

'She didn't like her hair because people kept criticising her about it. That's racism,' said her father, who worked as a security guard at her school.

Brazil outlawed revenge porn in 2014 following the high-profile death of a 17-year-old girl, who killed herself when a video of her having sex was leaked online.

Under Brazilian law, recording or disclosing intimate images without authorisation is now considered a violation of privacy.

After Karina's death, the family were put through more turmoil when, according to Buzzfeed, one of her sister's received a photo of the teenager's corpse in a Whatsapp group. The picture was taken at the scene of the suicide.

'The only ones who went in [the house] were the crime scene expert and the police. I keep asking myself who could have leaked those photos. No strangers went in there,' said Karina's mother.

The family have filed a complaint about the leaked image with the Nova Andradina Police Department, which is investigating the teenager's death.
