La Posada del Marques, Mallorca

Autumn sun isn't just about the beach; it can also mean a 16th-century mansion hidden away in Mallorca's lush Tramuntana Mountains. La Posada del Marques sits 500 metres above sea level and has some pretty awe-inspiring views over the south of the island. Suites are traditional but plush, and each comes with its own private roof terrace for catching rays and watching sunsets. Its remote location makes for unadulterated relaxation between working your way through the amazing menu and extensive wine list overlooking the twinkling lights of Palma.

Borgo Egnazia, Puglia

There are few places quite as lovely as the sunny South Italian shores of Puglia. And there are even fewer better places once you're there than Borgo Egnazia. Built out of honey-coloured sandstone in the style of a traditional Apulian village, the hotel is a total suntrap. The suites are elegant and filled with quirky design details from the ceiling lights made from bottles to the bird cages and old books tied up with string. With October temperatures reaching a balmy 70 degrees Fahrenheit, you can spend lazing afternoons borrowing bikes to cycle between one of the four elegant swimming pools, the ancient olive groves and the beach.
