Ksar Char Bagh, Marrakech

‘Hotel’ doesn’t really do Ksar Char Bagh justice. An Al Andalus-inspired pleasure palace on the outskirts of Marrakech, there’s more than a touch of Arabian Nights to the place. The pool is suitably out-of-this-world. Flanked by palms and day-beds and opening up at one end on to the hotel’s main Alhambra-esque tower, it’s a special spot.

SLS Beverley Hills, Los Angeles

You don’t get an A+ list celebrity following in a sultry city like Los Angeles if you don’t have a seriously sexy pool to stretch out by after a day’s dodging the paps. SLS Beverly more than meets the mark, with a rooftop pool that's still one of the hottest places to see and be seen in LA and is often packed with immaculate Hollywood bodies, soaking up the vibe.

Devi Garh, Udaipur

If SLS Beverly Hills is popular with Hollywood’s finest, Devi Garh in Udaipur is a favourite with India’s equivalent being a popular Bollywood shooting location. The views from the pool at this outrageously grand fort-cum-palace hotel are out over the manicured gardens, to the village below and the misty mountains beyond. Stunning.

Ritz Carlton, Hong Kong

Unlike the other hotel pools we’ve picked out, the Ritz Carlton’s in Hong Kong is an indoor affair. Up on the 118th-floor, the views, though, mean it’s impossible to leave off any list of the world’s greatest (and glam-est) hotel pools. The infinity-edged pool gives straight onto clear views across Hong Kong. You’re so high up that the container-laden super-ships down below appear as mere bathtub toys and the cityscape a dinky collection of Lego bricks. It’ll be a matter of minutes before you’ve filled the memory card on your camera.

The Raleigh, Miami

We finish with a very different sort of glamour – of the old-school Art Deco variety at The Raleigh in Miami. The pool’s slinky curves are swathed in lush tropical foliage, and at night it's lit up by hundreds of tiny twinkling lights that reflect in the water. Days can be lazily whiled away on the white cabana beds, cocktail in hand, safe in the knowledge that you’re following in the footsteps of many a celebrity over the years.
