The Icon
Designed by Sir Terence Conran and a dream team of home-grown design talent, the Hotel Icon is a city hotel with bags of street cred. The lobby is crisp and contemporary with a triple-height wall of windows, which feeds light onto Asias largest indoor vertical garden. Rooms are positively roomy by Hong Kong standards and are packed with features and freebies. Alongside an Angasna Spa, there's an excellent clutch of bars and restaurants as well as some of the citys best shopping on its doorstep. Its a good bet if youre looking for a five-star design hotel without burning a hole in your pocket.

The Upper House
The Upper House is the epitome of Hong Kong design hotel cool. Asian wunderkind Andre Fu is behind the drop-dead gorgeous look - a wonderfully subtle mix of cool cream marble, achingly-luxurious amenities and contemporary art installations. Already a Hong Kong institution, tables need to be booked weeks in advance at the heavenly Café Gray Deluxe and drinks on the terrace are a must-do. With a superb location in Admiraltys shopping area and a short hop to Hong Kongs lively nightlife, the Upper House is hard (if not impossible) to beat if youre looking for a stylish city break hotel.

J Plus Boutique Hotel
Re-launched under its new name earlier this year, the Philippe Stark designed, J Plus Boutique Hotel, continues to exert a gravitational pull on the posse of die-hard design-lovers who hang out there. Hidden behind tinted-glass in the up-and-coming (and still authentically edgy Causeway Bay area), the 56 guest rooms and suites are more like sleek city apartments with their white on white tones and Smeg appliances. A chi-chi bar, atmospheric roof terrace and Michelin-starred Italian restaurant make it perfectly situated for a decadent weekend of partying Hong Kong style.

The Ritz-Carlton
First off, set aside any preconceptions you might have about the Ritz-Carltons suave yet sometimes rather stuffy image, as this Hong Kong installation is utter design heaven. Within the sleek super-tower the décor is packed with celebrity-style swagger; the knock-out 103rd floor lobby with its smoked glass and curvaceous furnishings make for a magazine-shoot entrance while the hotels stellar bars and restaurants feature dizzyingly-high ceilings and statement chandeliers. And, of course, theres the view; best enjoyed from one of the celestial-feeling, truly luxurious rooms - Lady Gaga can vouch for that.

The Fleming
A stylish yet economical alternative is buzzy boutique hotel, the Fleming. Exuding cool from every minimalist angle, the hotel manages to balance striking design (think Italian marble, frosted glass, amber-hued abstract artworks and flamboyant floral displays) with a welcoming, homely vibe and very reasonable rates. Throw in a fabulous location in Wan Chai a quick tram ride away from most of what the city has to offer, including Hong Kongs unofficial party zone and its well worth a visit.
