Four Seasons Florence

A good proposal deserves a good dose of grandeur. And the Four Seasons Florence has that. In spades. First off, there’s the premises, a mix of 15th-century Renaissance palace and 16th-century convent of cavernous, fresco-lined ceilings surrounded by fountain-filled, statue-studded gardens. Then there are the rooms (which are said to count amongst their fans)... While all are beautiful, the 200 square-metre Royal Suite is as close to a nailed down marriage deal-sealer as we can think of.

Hacienda Na Xamena, Ibiza

Hidden away on a secluded clifftop on the north of the island, there aren’t many more romantic places to stay in Ibiza than Hacienda Na Xamena. How to propose, though? Simple. With an afternoon’s being pulled into shape by skilled hands in the spa and a dip in the infinity pool, before sidling back to your terrace in time for sunset and celebratory cocktails. Job done.

Chateau de la Chevre d’Or, Cote d’Azur

In keeping with the rest of our pick of the best hotels to propose in, it’s fair to say that this French Riviera institution is unlikely to win over any future husbands with a taste for the minimal. The Peninsula, Hong Kong

If we had to propose to our other half today, we’d be carefully considering doing it… from the bath. As romantic gestures go, champagne plus enormous bath tub may not be the most original. But as soon as you throw some amazing views of the Hong Kong skyline into the equation, as far as creative proposal ideas go, it more than hits the mark.

Hotel Cipriani, Venice

From old-school Hollywood royalty like Jack Nicholson and Angelica Huston to new stars such as Jennifer Lopez and Uma Thurman, via fashion aristocracy ( and Gianni were regulars at one time or another), they don’t come much more celeb-studded than Venice grande dame the Cipriani.

As for the matter of popping the question itself, it would pretty much look after itself: the Palladio Suite. You arrive by private dock to acres of full-scale, no-holding back Venetian twiddliness with two marble bathrooms and a 4.5 metre-long private dipping pool with views of the Venice Lagoon. Frankly, if he said no after that, he wouldn’t be worth it in the first place.
