Beverly Hills Hotel, Los Angeles

If you’re thinking movies, you're probably thinking LA. Spiritual home of all things silver screen, Hollywood’s playground has countless hotels which, from the glamorous Golden Age to today, have popped up in some of our favourite films. Hollywood stalwart the Beverly Hills Hotel (Beverlyhillshotel.com) was the location for the award-winning production of The Way We Were, Shampoo, California Suite and the infamous American Gigolo. Down in southern California, meanwhile, the legendary Hotel del Coronado (Hoteldel.com), has not just been the venue for numerous Oscar’s ceremonies (and countless A-list check-ins), but it was also the setting for Marilyn Monroe’s Some Like it Hot and, supposedly, the inspiration behind the designs of the Emerald City in the Wizard of Oz.

Luton Hoo

Luton? Not quite the place you'd expect to spot a global superstar, perhaps. But that’s before you’ve reckoned with Luton Hoo. The Grade I-listed neo-classical mansion has been the location for many a film, with Wings of the Dove, The World is not Enough, Gosford Park and Enigma all having been filmed here. However, in film terms it’s best known for Richard Curtis monster hit Four Weddings and a Funeral, in which both the grand ballroom and the Lady Butler suite (which sees Hugh Grant hide in the cupboard and witness a secret romantic tryst) both make an appearance. And Hugh's no stranger to a great British hotel: in 1995 film Notting Hill, he poses as a reporter in order to meet leading Hollywood lady Anna (Julia Roberts) who's checked into The Ritz (Theritzlondon.com) under the name ‘Wilma Flintstone’.

Beverly Wilshire Hotel, Los Angeles

If there was a lifetime achievement award for a hotel on screen, it would probably have to go to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel (Fourseasons.com/beverlywilshire) in California. At the foot of Rodeo Drive, this movie veteran has featured in A Shot in the Dark, Eyes Wide Shut, Never Say Never Again and Wilde. However, it was most memorably put on the movie map by a scene-stealing moment in Pretty Woman when Julia Roberts sings along, badly, to Prince in the enormous penthouse bathtub. Elsewhere in the movie, Las Palmas Hotel (Hollywoodhotellaspalmas.com) appeared as Robert’s apartment (from which Gere climbs up to rescue her), while at the (now demolished) Ambassador Hotel, the kind manager teaches Vivian about place settings. The Ambassador also starred as the fictional hotel, Hotel Taft, in The Graduate, where it was the setting for Ben and Mrs Robinson’s first rendezvous.

Le Meurice, Paris

A roundup of hotels in the movies wouldn’t be complete without a couple of nice places to stay in Paris. And there's definitely no shortage of contenders: Le Meurice was used for the rooftop drinks party in the opening scenes of Midnight in Paris, and Le Bristol (Lebristolparis.com) is where Owen Wilson takes his fiancée on holiday. Woody Allen also chose Parisian grande dame The Ritz (Ritzparis.com) for his 1996 film Everyone says I Love You, while just minutes across town, the Le Royal Monceau Raffles (Raffles.com/paris), provided the perfect backdrop for a scene in Leonardo DiCaprio mind-messer Inception. Plus, who could forget the last episode of Sex and the City - where Sarah Jessica Parker visits Paris and stays in the seriously swanky Plaza Athenee (Plaza-athenee-paris.com)?

Hotel Atlantic Kempinski, Hamburg

If it's a Bond film you're talking about, then you can bet your bottom dollar there's going to be a hefty dose of style and some very impressive hotels involved. (After all, you’ve got to impress a Bond girl somewhere...) The Hotel Atlantic Kempinski (Kempinski.com) was the perfect location for Tomorrow Never Dies, with its memorable stunt scene in which Pierce Brosnan climbs out of the Atlantic suite onto the hotel roof. Over in the Czech Republic, 18th-century Grandhotel Pupp (Pupp.cz) - or Hotel Splendide as it's known in the film - saw Daniel Craig dashing (in more ways than one) around the lobby in 2006's Casino Royal.
