Prestonfield, Edinburgh

Ordinarily speaking, romantic hotel breaks don’t get much more swoon-inducing than a night in a Scottish castle. But Prestonfield takes its romantic setting (complete with peacock-filled gardens) and then throws a whole fancy-dress box of tactile fabrics (from velvet to mock-croc) dramatic, sensual reds, crimsons and blacks and flickering candles at it. A true one-off.

Romantic gesture? A wintry walk up through Hollyrood Park to Arthur’s Seat to admire the views of the city stretched out below.

The George in Rye

The George is somewhere that really knows how to do romantic. It's a place that offers that winning mix of atmospheric historic premises and chintz-free interiors that’s so central to a successful Valentine's Day getaway. On top of the rooms (many of which have roll-top baths), there’s a lovely, snug old bar and a wood-panelled sitting room – both of which have open fires for huddling up in front of if the wintry weather hasn’t quite let up.

Romantic gesture? A day of hand-held walks along the stunning Camber Sands followed by cream tea and a potter round the antiques shops of Rye (on the hunt for costume jewellery and other knickknacks) is definitely worth insisting upon.

Valentine’s Day prices at The George in Rye start at £135 per room per night. Read our full review of The George in Rye and book.

Drakes, Brighton

Drakes is a Brighton boutique institution and celebrity hotspot that’s seen everyone from Cate Blanchett to Sophie Dahl and Kylie check in at one time or another – and much of that reputation has been built on its top-notch romantic getaway credentials. How exactly? Let us count the ways: on top of the lovely Regency townhouse setting, the suites have sea views and roll-top baths to take them in from, Room 104 has the largest bed in Brighton (all seven-feet of it), while The Restaurant is one of the better places to eat in town.

Romantic gesture? Hole yourselves up in one of the front suites, order room service, admire the views of the twinkling pier and let the rest of the world be damned for the night…

The Varsity Hotel, Cambridge

Dutiful beaus take note, The Varsity Hotel has some of the best city views of any hotel in the country. Six floors up, the penthouse Masters Suites consist of 80m2 of sprawling sleeping space and adjoining sitting rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows running down one side. You can finish the stay up the next day with a long soak in the spa's Jacuzzi and yet more views - this time of the River Cam as it drifts lazily by.

Valentine’s Day prices at The Varsity Hotel start at £130 per room per night. Read our full review of The Varsity Hotel and book.

Romantic gesture? After an afternoon’s exploring the colleges followed by a misty walk along the river, find a quiet corner in one of the city's many great pubs like The Eagle or The Mitre (8 Benet Street, 01223 505020; 17 Bridge Street, 01223 358403).

The Queensberry Hotel, Bath

In stark contrast with the grand, traditional Regency facade, The Queensberry Hotel is an outpost of contemporary chic in a town that tends to deal in history and atmosphere rather than 24-hour cool. With its 20-odd super-stylish rooms, a sanctuary-like feel in the Q Bar and a restaurant with an award-winning wine list and a romantic Valentine’s Day menu featuring oysters over ice, crab tian, champagne granitas and raspberry Baked Alaska, there’s little need to leave the building over the course of a stay.

Romantic gesture? Treat yourselves to a day at Britain’s only natural spa, Thermae Bath Spa (Thermaebathspa.com), or for something a bit more 21st-century, book in at the MacDonald Bath Spa.
