Z Hotel Soho

If you thought that staying in the very centre of Central London was reserved only for those with deep pockets, then think again. Z Hotel Soho is a new concept hotel of 80 bijoux bedrooms in 12 knocked together Georgian townhouses just off Old Compton Street. While space here might be at a premium (rooms range from diminutive to super-diminutive), they do throw in more than a few perks to sweeten the pill such as hand-made, sink-into beds, iPod docking stations, en-suite bathrooms with Thierry Mugler products and a location so central that you’re practically already at the party. The best bit, though, is that prices start from just £85 - and for a bed for the night in Soho that’s definitely not to be sniffed at.

Church Street Hotel

We like our hotels with a bit of character - and that’s certainly something the Church Street Hotel has in spades. Located down in Camberwell, it's got a very laid-back vibe and masses of Mexican flair. Forget mushroom and beige tones, bedrooms are soaked with cobalt blue washes and citrus brights on the walls and earthy-red tones on the linens covering the super-comfy wrought iron beds. Delicious breakfasts of organic breads, Neal's Yard yoghurts and smoothies (all purchased from nearby Borough Market) are served up in the mornings, while downstairs the quirky-cool Havana lounge also doubles up as a place to unwind in the evening with its high ceilings, oak blinds and American wood panelling.

Aloft London Excel

After its sister hotel opened to rave reviews in Brooklyn last year, the latest offering from the Aloft brand has just washed up on British shores. The chosen location is the Docklands, and a very handy distance from the Olympic site in Stratford and the new Westfield shopping centre. Interiors are chic and modern with high ceilings, oversized windows and bedrooms which, continuing in the theme of the hotel, are minimal and come with king-size platform beds and super-speedy WiFi. Back downstairs, there’s the W,X,Y,Z bar serving up well mixed cocktails, an inviting swimming pool and a blue tiled Moroccan-style sauna. When you get all this plus a decent breakfast from around £80 a night, it's hard not to put it up there with the very best cheap places to stay in London.

B&B Belgravia

While there might not be a great deal in the way of five-star frills and fripperies at the B&B Belgravia, it certainly has a few other things going for it. First up, there's the location in a Georgian townhouse in well-heeled Belgravia; then there’s the bright and airy interiors, with natural sunlight flooding into every corner. Upstairs, there are 17 chicly turned out, well-appointed bedrooms, and downstairs there's a guest lounge offering relaxed seating, an open fire and an open plan kitchen to enjoy a freshly-prepared breakfast in. Basically, it's the perfect antidote to the chaos of the city - and with bags of spare change in your pocket when you leave, too.

Myhotel Bloomsbury

Myhotel Bloomsbury does budget the ELLE way: in style. It mixes a great location - on Tottenham Court Road, a hop, skip and a jump from buzzing Soho, Covent Garden and Oxford Street - with pretty much everything you could really need. The whole place has been subtly designed using the principles of feng shui by Conran & Partners, and the minimalist aesthetic and general sense of calm blend with muted colours, graphic wallpapers and a cool mix of vintage and designer furniture. Each of the 77 bedrooms is spacious, has huge beds clad in crisp Egyptian linen, bathtubs to soak in and, blissfully, windows that block out all of the noise of the city outside.
