Five of the Best: Luxury Hotels for a Caribbean Honeymoon

Follow in the footsteps of the rich and famous

Jalousie Plantation, St Lucia

Serious privacy is what the Jalousie Plantation St Lucia is all about. For starters, you’re cocooned from the rest of the world by a couple of hundred acres of gently swaying coconut plantations. But the site itself is also so large that it’d be hard to leave even if you could manage to pull yourself away from the outdoor spa cabanas, the bar with its own rum-elier and the seriously honeymoon-friendly Grand Luxury Villas, which come with their own plunge pools and in-room butlers.

Kamalame Cay, Bahamas

Eye-wateringly expensive Kamalame Cay may be, but there aren’t that many luxury hotels – in the Caribbean or anywhere else – where you get to stay on your own private island. The hotel is surrounded by three miles of beaches – and with only a maximum of 20 other guests to share it with, that’s a lot of empty sand. The only downside is, with off-season rates starting from £550, unless your significant other is a successful hedge-fund manager it’s probably going to be out of reach…

Mount Cinnamon, Grenada

Compared to one or two of the rest of our pick of ultra-luxury romantic retreats, Mount Cinnamon is positively bargain basement. Peter De Savary’s boutique resort is made up of a series of red-roofed villas tucked into the broad curve of sand of Grand Anse Beach. Push the boat out for your own villa, and you’re rewarded with separate his 'n' hers dressing rooms and vast private balconies.

Nisbet Plantation, Nevis

Nevis might not be quite as exclusive as Andros (Kamalame Cay’s private island of the Lotus Eaters), but it’s definitely not far behind. And on the far north tip of the island, the pretty-as-a-picture cottages of Nisbet Plantation emerge from the surrounding plantations straight out onto a sparkling white beach, with a ruined sugar mill covered in bougainvillea to complete the wildly romantic scene.

The Caves, Jamaica

With just 12 individually decorated cliff top villas, The Caves is another ultra-exclusive, luxury Caribbean honeymoon bolthole. And again it’s got a guestbook full of exclusive A-list signatures (think Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Sadie Frost and Scarlett Johansson) to match. The highlight? Romantic dinners in a candlelit limestone cave. Or, for the more adventurous, waking up in the morning and jumping off the cliff edge straight into the bright blue waters below…
