Seven Things Not To Miss In London This Weekend: Jan 27 - 29
Yes! January is nearly over! Ways to celebrate, incoming…
FOOD: Borough Plates
It's fair to say that Borough has cornered the market on, er, markets – bringing together all manner of fabulous foodie produce. And now they've got their sights set on pop-ups too, with this, a two-month restaurant located right at the very ground-zero of ingredients. Working with seasonal finds fresh from the market, a team of guest chefs will put together an ever-changing menu of 10 small plates – think pork rillettes with pickled russet apples, or perhaps salt-baked soused radish, with beaufort cheese, walnut and sage pesto – priced from £6-£16.
Now that's what we call, ahem, market value.
Until 31 March
Borough Plates, 1 Cathedral Street, SE1 9AL
POP-UP: Burns Baby Burns
Familiar with the works of Scottish national poet Robert Burns? No, us neither. But happily we ARE familiar with the works of east London party outfit Burns Baby Burns, who are back to throw their yearly bash his honour. Needless to say, festivities are more Scottish than a tartan-wearing bagpiper named Hamish – including, as they do, a three-course Burns Night supper (giant haggis included), twirling fire poles, face painters, whisky by the barrel-load and the most riotous ceilidh in town. Which all sounds like poetry to us.
26-28 Jan; from £40
Burns Baby Burns, St. John's at Hackney Church, Lower Clapton Rd, E5 0PD
POP-UP: Outside In
People often say that London doesn't have enough green spaces. Well pfft to you, people! This weekend London is getting a very green space – and better yet, one you don't need to go out in the cold for. Welcome to Outside In, an indoor oasis (yep) that's actually inside a Clerkenwell house (double yep). A team up between Airbnb and Pantone – whose colour of the year is Greenery – behind a vivid green door you'll find a woodland reception, an indoor greenhouse/dining room, a garden bedroom with mown lawn, topiaries and soporific plants, and a herb garden kitchen. What's more, you can also book Experiences including planting a terrarium, practising t'ai chi and – best of all – making your own gin from scratch. Which you just don't get in your average field.
27-30 Jan; book free Experiences here

EVENT: VAULT Festival
It's hard for us to find the words to sum up just how much stuff is going on at this six-week subterranean festival of performing arts, what with all the emerging musicians, artists, comedians and dancers; all the debates, film screenings, theatre, forums and workshops; all the custom-built stages, pop-up bars and restaurants. We think we'll go with 'exactly sh*tloads'. Yeah, that covers it.
Until 5 Mar; prices vary
The Vaults, 7AD, Leake St, SE1 7NN
ART: teamLab: Transcending Boundaries
Reckon that art comes in frames on walls? Think again, our analogue friend. This new immersive exhibition at Pace gallery does away with all that in fine digital style. Tokyo tech-art collective teamLab bring you three rooms of installations that 'explore the role of technology in transcending physical and conceptual borders' – which translates as virtual waterfalls flowing from the walls to around your feet, 3D waves of water washing over you, and your own body being used as a canvas for flowers that respond to your movements. Which all further translates as: C-O-O-L.
Until Mar 11; free
Pace Gallery, 6 Burlington Gardens, W1S 3ET
MUSIC: Independent Venue Week
We all like seeing the Next Big Thing before they're the Next Big Thing, right? And here is your chance to check out NBTs all around the city's coolest small venues as part of Independent Venue Week. Top tips include: punkers Skinny Girl Diet at Nambucca on Thursday; rockers Massmatiks at the 229, The Venue on Friday; and garage psychedelia from Phobophobes at Windmill Brixton on Saturday.
Meanwhile, ex-Fall member Brix Smith Start takes the stage at the 100 Club on Thursday - and, if you happen to be up north, seeing the Cabbage gig in Hebden Bridge will equal future bragging aplenty.
Until 29 Jan, at venues around London and the UK. For full listings, click here
THEATRE: The Great Gatsby
Way back before Charlie Sheen and that guy whose house party went viral on Facebook, the wildest shindigs were thrown by 1920s Jazz Age hero Gatsby. (Yes, we know he's fictional, just go with us here.) And the good news is that he's at it again, taking over the Vaults in Waterloo – and you're invited. One-part theatre, two-parts party, this immersive take on F Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel features glittering jazz bars, Charleston dancers, cocktails and flapper dresses aplenty. You'll make your way around drawing rooms and boudoirs as the story of Gatsby and Daisy unfolds, finishing up in the main hall for – you guessed it – one humdinger of a party. They don't call Gatsby great for nothing.
Until 5 Mar, part of VAULT Festival; from £26.75
Gatsby, The Vaults, 7AD, Leake St, SE1 7NN5
