NIGHTLIFE: Housekeeping Records presents Black Coffee
What would the bank holiday be without the chance to go out and dance like there ain't no work on Monday? And here's your opportunity, folks. Uber-cool imprint Housekeeping is bringing South Africa's most respected DJ (and Drake collaborator) Black Coffee right here to One Embankment for a bank holiday showcase. And boy, are we glad to see him. Recently announced as a resident at Hi Ibiza (formerly Space, FYI), you can expect sun-flecked beats and hedonistic White Isle vibes aplenty. Which is just not something you can often say of Victoria Embankment.
29 Apr; £35
One Embankment, 8 Victoria Embankment, London WC2R 2AB
FOOD: The Art of Dining: Operation Red Rocket
So, this weekend you could go out for dinner. Or you COULD go out for 'an immersive retro futuristic dining experience'. We bet we know which way you're swaying. Especially once you hear that it's the latest pop-up from the Art of Dining crew, who are transporting you back to 1965 at the 'British National Space Laboratory' (in, er, Haggerston). Here you'll become astronauts undergoing vigorous training for a mission to start a colony on Mars... Only said vigorous training involves a tucking into a five-course, future-themed feast. Just like Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin did, we're sure.
Until 13 May; £55
Art of Dining Red Rocket, The Rose Lipman Building, 43 De Beauvoir Road, London, N1 5SQ
ART: Morphosis at West Contemporary
If you're done with pushing round the major galleries at bank holidays (seriously, a visit to the Tate involves crowd-surfing), then can we suggest you try something new and different? And galleries don't come newer than West Contemporary, which has just opened up shop in Fitzrovia. As for the different? That comes in the form of its inaugral exhibition, Morphosis, which brings together sculpture, painting, mixed media, photography and light art by established and emerging artists, who have all created new pieces, 'interpreting a state of dreamy meditation as a basis of exploring ideas and composition'. Intrigued? You know what to do.
Until 2 May; free
West Contemporary, Gallery Different, 14 Percy St, W1T 1DR
DRINK: Spiritland
The King's Cross renaissance continues: first came the food, then came the theatre, now comes the cool. In the form of new bar Spiritland. Which, actually, is way more than just a bar: it's a cafe/workspace by day and a restaurant/listening bar by night, featuring a state-of-the-art sound system and one hell of an events line-up. The likes of Hot Chip and Jarvis Cocker have DJ residencies; the Spiritland Talks kicked off this week with Bill Nighy and Nick Hornby; and this weekend you can catch sets by We Are The Sunset and Nancy Noise, plus - marvellously - a Sunday night DJ session celebrating Earth Wind & Fire. See? COOL.
Spiritland, 9-10 Stable Street London N1C 4AB
SHOPPING: Rumble in the Jumble
Imagine a jumble sale where you can rummage through Kate Moss's band T-shirts, Fearne Cotton's dungarees and Florence Welch's – well – ANYTHING. Well imagine no more, friends, as Rumble in the Jumble is returning to Oval Space this very Saturday. Selling second-hand pieces straight out of the wardrobes of celebrities, you can also find wares from the likes of Mark Ronson, Noel Gallagher, Beth Ditto, Foals, Charli XCX and Kasabian. Not that they're short of pennies, mind: profits go directly to Oxfam's Music Circle charity. Which means you can feel even better when you're kicking back in Mossy's cast-offs.
29 Apr; £5
Rumble in the Jumble, Oval Space, 29-32 The Oval, E2 9DT
NIGHTLIFE: Glitterbox
Q: How many mirror balls are too many mirror balls? A: There is NO SUCH THING. With this in mind, may we present the bank holiday special from Glitterbox, the legendary Ibiza club night jetting back to Ministry of Sound this Sunday for a huge all-day, all-night bash. A celebration of all things sparkly, expect visual excess in the form of spandex-clad dancers, mind-bending light displays, a hell of a lot of confetti – plus sets from house music greats Roger Sanchez, Aeroplane and Karizma. Oh, and mirror balls. 200 of 'em.
30 Apr; from £20
Ministry of Sound, 103 Gaunt Street, Elephant & Castle, SE1 6DP
MUSIC: The She Street Band
There is surely only one thing that could make the songs of Bruce Springsteen any better. And that is being covered live by a cool-as-f**k all-female band. Well, ta da! It's happening, and moreover it's happening this weekend. Taking the stage at Hackney's Moth Club, the splendidly named She Street Band (geddit?) will be banging out all the classics (Dancing in the Dark, Streets of Philadelphia, Born to Run…), plus there will be special guests, a photo booth and a Springsteen-themed disco late into the night. Ready your bandanas, people: this is going to be BOSS.
29 Apr; £7
The Moth Club, Old Trades Hall, Valette Street, E9 6NU
