So you want bands and beats and bushy beards? Then this is the festival for you, alliteration fans. With the muddy-marvellous feel of a traditional fest, yet still just a Tube-ride home, Field Day is back and packing the finest indie, rock and the cooler end of dance into a single day in Victoria Park. Bands-wise, we have Arab Strap, Run the Jewels and 90s indie heroes Slowdive in prospect, while headliner Aphex Twin, Ame and Dekmantel Soundsystem have beats to spare. As for the beards? The suitably hip crowd are sure to take care of those, don't you worry.

Things are just chicer in France, wouldn't you say? For example, a 'small glass' – it's a coupette. A cheese toasty? Well that's a croque monsieur. And as for cocktails, the rule goes double. And here to highlight the gulf between us and Gallic cool is new Bethnal Green bar Coupette, which is setting out to fill its small glasses with some very cool French drinks indeed. We're talking champagne from small-scale growers, vermouth and calvados cocktails, and truffled white negronis (whipped up by the former head bartender of The Savoy's Beaufort Bar, no less). Food-wise there's an ENTIRE MENU devoted to croque monsieur, not to mention special bimonthly tastings at the Calvados Club. Vive la France – en Bethnal Green.
