Gin, it won't have escaped your notice, is hot right now. And nowhere more so than at the Ham Yard Hotel. Because on their twinkling rooftop terrace, they're serving up junipery cocktails heated by… wait for it… red hot pokers. Really. Seems that – back in the days before central heating – this is how gin used to be drunk. And the team at HYH have recreated the experience, with cocktails 'poked' piping hot, which caramelises the sugars and produces 'ginny' magic. There are hot G&Ts, steaming Singapore slings, a 'poked' porter-based cocktail recipe from 1929… Makes you wonder why anyone bothered to invent central heating at all, really.

The Scots have the right idea when it comes to January. Abstinence, fortitude and early nights? Ach, NOOO. They throw a great big ol' party instead, on Burns Night. And having an even better idea is Fitzrovia and Devonshire Square's Scottish restaurants Mac and Wild, who are throwing a party SO big, it can't be contained in a single evening and are extending celebrations to cover the whole week instead. Aye! There's haggis-making classes, whisky luges and chocolate pairing sessions, while Saturday sees a free gin and whisky tasting at the Devonshire Square branch. And, not for the faint-hearted, you can tackle the special Haggis, Neeps and Tatties burger all week long – with brown sauce gravy to pour over the top. Seems the Scots have the right idea when it comes to January dieting, too…
