Mama Shelter, Marseille, France

Shaking up the Marseille hotel scene is the achingly hip Mama Shelter, with its Philippe Starck interiors, tiny price-tag and resident DJ. The former butcher’s shop turned reception has a blackboard-chalked ceiling, helpful aproned staff and glass cabinets topped with metal octopuses.

Its 127 soundproofed, minimalist bedrooms have concrete walls, grafittied carpets, crisp linens, iMacs and the odd superhero mask dotted about. Downstairs, there’s a copious breakfast buffet to contend with, a buzzing events calendar (this place can party), a bar lined with illuminated rubber rings and a giant chess set on the sun terrace.

Generator Barcelona, Spain

Hostel life is tiring – shared bathrooms, sleeping in bunk rooms with strangers … but Generator bridges the gap between backpacker and boutique, especially if you’ve grown out of dorm antics but not the prices.

The Barcelona outpost is split into hostel and hotel. Backpacker fun is there if you want it – there are walking tours and parties – but you can avoid it altogether if you upgrade to the snazzy décor and spaciousbalconies of the hotel’s two floors upstairs ( accessed by a private lift).

There’s even a two-bedroom penthouse, with a wrap-around balcony and a bathtub that looks out over the Sagrada Familia. Split the cost between six people and even that  is a steal.

Carrer de Còrsega, 373-377, 08037 Barcelona, Spain, +34 932 20 03 77, generatorhostels.com. Private hostel rooms from £40, hotel doubles from £65 and penthouse from £155 (all room only).

Roommate Aitana, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

On its own little man-made island on Amsterdam’s IJ River, Roommate Aitana is a spectacular new building with a glass façade, and 284 contemporary rooms linked by space ship-like corridors, and spread over 12 floors.

Interiors are super modern, with lots of white and splashes of bright colour, and floor-to-ceiling windows giving birds-eye views over city and river. We loved the soft bedlinen and heavyweight, American Curl towels, taking beer from the bar to drink out on the dock and renting bikes to zip around the city.

Hotel San José, Austin, Texas, US

Hotel San José Austin Texas

Allison V Smith

The 40-room Hotel San José is the place to stay in travel spot du jour, Austin. The ex-1939 motel is an oasis of laid-back cool on buzzy South Congress Avenue, with its pizza-by-the-slice hatches, dive bars and tattooed locals.

Bungalows are bare-all concrete with Navajo rugs, coolly kitsch (think paisley and florals) bedspreads, and music paraphernalia, and they play host to many a musician during SXSW. As this is a place that caters to the rock ’n’ roll set (people are in the pool way past bedtime) breakfast is delivered to rooms ‘bento style’.

The Jane, New York

Overlooking the Hudson River, in Manhattan’s upscale West Village, The Jane is the perfect place to get a taste of New York’s good life on a tight budget.  Be warned, though: the hotel’s 200 cabin-style rooms – which come decked out with flatscreen TVs and free WiFi - are tiny, with single beds and (super-clean) shared bathrooms on each floor.

Regardless, the hotel itself is impossibly cool, with a sexy cocktail bar on the ground floor and an in-house bistro in the form of hipster hangout Café Gitane. Fuel up on their famous avocado toast, then walk it all off on the High Line; a tree-lined elevated park located just two blocks away.
