Smile, you’re on camera

With all those cameras on you, it's important that your teeth are looking their best on the big day. So, with a couple of months to go, I decided to book into the London Smile Clinic for a boost.

I'd been to my own dentist a few weeks before to check everything was in order, but after a consultation with the practice founder, Dr. Tim Bradstock-Smith, he still insisted on giving me a full dental check-up to make sure my teeth were in good health.

With the green light given, Dr. Tim advised that I book in for a hygiene appointment the week before my treatment. This ensures that your teeth are more susceptible to whitening.

Hygienist appointments at the London Smile Clinic are reassuringly thorough. In addition to a jolly good scrub and polish, I received some sage advice about everyday oral health care, such as how to floss correctly – sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised about the little details you might be overlooking. I like this well-rounded approach: it feels as though you’re doing something positive for your health, rather than just whitening out of vanity.

A week later, I was ready to return to the clinic for the full works: the Phillips in-chair whitening treatment. This consists of 5 x 15 minute applications of whitening gel – reduced sensitivity, in the wake of new EU regulations – and activated by a beaming power light. It’s odd at first, lying back with your mouth prized open with a gum guard, but you soon begin to relax, especially as you wear special film goggles throughout - I opted for an oldie, Chocolat.

After the treatment, you boost and maintain the result with the Phillips home whitening kit, which is included in the price. I found that it was at home that I really start to see the results.

The Phillips home whitening kit comes with custom made soft, plastic teeth moulds – a bit like those retainers you wear after you have braces, but a lot more comfortable. You place the gel in the tray, then wear them for up to an hour a day. It meant that I could whiten at my leisure, rather than having to wear the moulds overnight.

I definitely noticed a difference, carrying on the treatment for the full, recommended two week burst. I was sent off with extra gel, too, so I could top up nearer to W-day. It lasts for months if you keep it in the fridge.

So far, so white. Bring on the flashbulbs.
