Three ELLE brides choose their favourites from the New York runways...

It’s Bridal Fashion Week in New York: a chance for fashion girls to stare unabashedly at hundreds of beautiful bridal gowns, whether or not they have a ring on their finger.

Three of the members of Team ELLEuk.com are taking slightly more interest than most: we have a very recent bride (editor Carrie Tyler, who married just last December wearing a Philippa Lepley couture gown), a veteran bride (news editor Emily Cronin, who married in 2009 wearing lace Monique Lhuillier) and one bride-to-be, me (more on that later).

So how do the bridal tastes differ between neophyte, veteran, and fresh-back-from-honeymoon? Do the fantasies remain the same whether you’ve done your turn down the aisle or not? We set ourselves the arduous task of sifting through some of the collections shown in New York, and each came up with our two favourites (too hard to narrow it down to one).

If you were to do it all again, would choose differently?

CARRIE:

'It’s funny how I can’t look at bridal dresses objectively. I’m still eyeing these up with my figure and event in mind. This flirty little number would be a neat reverse of what I went for but I’d add an extra petticoat for oomph.'

'I always return to a Princess-line shape and this would be the first thing I’d try on in the shop. Unfortunately hindsight tells me I’d need to be a foot taller to make it work but I’m imagining I don’t have the benefit of that info yet...'

'Fresh and flirty, yet sophisticated—who wouldn’t want to be this woman, at least at a rehearsal dinner or going-away brunch?'

'The fact that this is basically the same dress I wore three years ago may mean I’m biased, but it also underlines how timeless Monique Lhuillier’s v-neck lace gowns truly are.'

ALANNAH:

'I’ve been on the lookout for new and unusual necklines, and I think that this ethereal confection from Monique Lhuillier is a beautiful update on the strapless style, highlighting the shoulders and clavicles which I think are an oft-underrated part of the body.'

'This gown has a simple silhouette, but the rich detailing of the beaded lace and the fine off-white layers add a richness to it. Plus, I love the hair: an exercise in sweet simplicity.'
