Choosing a wedding cakes are up there with one of the most important decisions a bride and groom makes in the lead up to their big day.

After you’ve chosen on the modern wedding dress, save the date cards and wedding shoes it’s time to start thinking about what kind of delicious and decadent food you want your guests to tuck into at the reception. For some this will involve choosing seasonal and fresh produce, whether it’s lobster, chicken or goat’s cheese tartlets, while others may opt for food that reflects their heritage, or push the boat out with cake pops, cookies, candy floss and even doughnut walls.

For many people, however, the wedding cake remains the pièce-de-résistance of wedding foods. Some popular wedding cake flavours include lemon, vanilla, carrot and red velvet, but there are several new emerging designs coming to the forefront of wedding art that are taking our fancy, including ‘naked’ cakes, Marie Antoinette-inspired designs and buttercream florals.

We’ve rounded up the best wedding cake designs to help you feel inspired for your big day.

East London-based cake maker Lily Vanilli is known for her extravagant, beautiful and eye-catching designs. We can't get enough of this mint green 'Sun Tav' cake, topped with buttercream icing and glacé cherries. This option is serving real Bridgerton vibes.

2

Sunset Cake

The sunset-inspired colours on this cake are just sublime and would suit a burgundy red colour scheme at a wedding perfectly. It's almost too good to eat (we said almost...).

3

Apple Pie Cake

Apple pie at a wedding? Never had we heard of such a thing until we saw this stunning piece of cake design made with cinnamon spice cake layers and decorated with flowers and geometric piping.

Keep things simple with this all white, four-tiered cake. We love the height, the minimalism, the simplicity and just a touch of colour with the flowers as a decoration at the bottom.

Buttercream Florals

Buttercream florals are 'in' all year round in our opinion. We love this intricate design atop this cake. It might not be large in size but it certainly packs a punch for the eyes.

Introduce a pop of colour to your wedding with this stunning two-tier ivory-coloured cake decorated with blue hues in chocolate and edible gold leaf on the tips.

7

Concrete Effect

We don't know if it's the stacking on terrarium-like glass stands or the concrete colours of these three individual cakes, but we're into it. Decorated with flowers and branches, this is a fairytale lovers wedding cake.

8

Carrot Cake

Top your two-tier 'naked' carrot cake with caramelised orange slices, meringue kisses and greenery. Isn't this just a beautiful concoction?

9

Doughnut Cake

Who likes doughnuts? We like doughnuts and so will most of your guests. Opt for a different sort of wedding cake and decorate your cake stands with copious amounts of glazed doughnuts for your guests to pick at during the festivities.

'Naked' cakes are beautiful to look at and eat. We love the simple layer of buttercream that's been stroked around the layers of vanilla and dark chocolate raspberry sponge here.

11

The Showstopper

If you're all about maximalism then you're going to want to go big. We're obsessed with this eight (yes, eight) tiered wedding cake which isn't so much decorated as much as it is cloaked in white and pink-hued roses. Warning: Make sure you have a door frame big enough to fit this one through.

12

Red Swirl

Perfect for a winter wedding, we love this red and pink-coloured swirly design which comes as the result of brush-stroked chocolate panels.

Minimalism Blocks

Round wedding cakes are the more traditional option, but if you want to push the boat out this year why not try a modern block cake? We love the bold shape and thickness of this.

Geometric Shapes

A marble-inspired wedding cake? Where do we sign? This is utterly beautiful. You could commission multiple wedding cake stacks inspired by this design for your big day.
