Meet Rebecca Ferguson
The star of hit new BBC drama, The White Queen
Rebecca Ferguson is the star of the summer’s biggest TV hit, the BBC’s major new drama, The White Queen.
In the June issue of ELLE, we brought you an exclusive shoot and interview with the 29-year-old actress, predicting great things.
Well, it's only one episode in and we're already hooked.
Set against the back drop of the War of the Roses, the series is based on an adaptation of Philippa Gregory’s bestselling novels, The Cousin’s War.
With the best of new British talent lining up to play the White Queen, Ferguson beat off every other actress to play Elizabeth Woodville, a commoner who marries the scheming Edward IV, played by the suitably dashing and arrogant, Max Irons.
Ready to take a Downtown like grip on our Sunday night TV watching, we fully expect a Ferguson frenzy.
The White Queen is on BBC 1 on Sunday nights at 9pm

ELLE reviews the book of the summer
The first proper social media novel, Kiss Me First by Lottie Moggach (Picador), is here.
When Tess & Leila meet online via an ethical debate forum, they become close and end up striking a strange and chilling deal: Leila must learn everything about Tess, so that she may take on her online identity.
Why? Because Tess wants to kill herself without her family knowing.
Fresh, knowing and undeniably creepy, this is a debut which will have you gasping with laughter and shivering with unease.

Friday night with Paloma Faith
By Louise Donovan
In true Paloma Faith style, the singer made a high profile, attention-grabbing entrance at the o2 arena on Friday night.
Dressed in a sheer crinoline skirt, sparkly cat suit and a matching headband, Faith brought her Fall From Grace tour back home to London in style.
The crowd was treated to her idiosyncratic brand of retro soul with hits including Let Your Love Walk In, Picking up the Pieces and Stone Cold Sober.
‘Here I am living the dream and half selling out the o2 arena,’ joked the Hackney born 27-year-old, though one quick look at the throbbing crowd (plus two platinum albums and two Brit nominations) would suggest otherwise.
Support act Laura Mvula, whose own performance of Green Garden was soulful and gorgeous, joined the singer on stage for a memorable duet of I Can’t Stand the Rain.
Later Faith performed an unrehearsed rendition of Etta James’ I’d Rather Go Blind with American musician Ty Taylor - whose electrifying voice was reminiscent of James Brown.
Individually Faith shone. Freedom was sung standing on top of the grand piano (Beyoncé-style), she belted out New York like her life depended on it and covered the crowd in glitter during the finale of Picking up the Pieces.
Down to earth, energetic and thoroughly entertaining, you can’t help but really like Paloma Faith. We’ll be humming her hits all week.
Laura Mvula's debut album, 'Sing To The Moon' is out now

"I'D LOVE TO BE A DIVA"
There's something about Amy Adams.
She may be a beautiful and ridiculously talented (with FOUR Oscar nominations to her name) but her most striking quality? That Hollywood rarity: HUMILITY.
Not many people would admit to feeling out of place at the Oscars, but that's Amy.
We loved her after gorgeous performances opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Catch Me If You Can and Meryl Streep in Julie and Julia, but since she sat down with ELLE for our July issue, we simply ADORE her and can't wait to see her in upcoming Superman remake Man of Steel.
Prepare to be utterly charmed by this very special star.
The July issue of ELLE is on sale now.

READ ALL ABOUT IT
The long hot summer is approaching and that means festivals, holidays and summer reading.
Whether you’re a classics or chic lit kind of girl, summer afternoons are a wonderful excuse to take a book outside and forget all about everything else.
Where better to find reading inspiration than Granta’s famous Young British Novelists issue.
The leading literary publication has been publishing its list of 20 key writers under 40 since 1983 and it has a curious intuition for who’s about to hit the big time: Ian McEwan, Salman Rushdie and Kazuo Ishiguro featured on the original list.
Alternatively, choose literature over the moshpit and head to a literary festival this summer.
This year’s programme includes events in London, Edinburgh and York and gives the hottest, newest names a platform alongside some of the most established literary figures of today.
To celebrate the arrival of reading season, we’ve teamed up with Granta to offer ten packages of prizes that bookworms will love.
Each prize includes:
- 1 year subscription to Granta, starting with the Best Young British Novelists issue
- A Granta tote bag
- A Moleskine notebook
- One pair of tickets to an event in Edinburgh (3 pairs available), York (4 pairs available) or London (3 pairs available)
To enter, simply send your name and contact details to elleexperience@elleuk.com with the subject line ‘YOUNG BRITISH NOVELISTS’. If you have a ticket preference then please say. Closing date is 31st May: winners will be notified soon afterwards.

ACCEPTABLE IN THE 80S
The V&A's summer exhibition, Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the 1980s celebrates the impact of London street style and the explosive club scene on the era’s eclectic fashion.
Co-curated by Wendy Dagworthy, a professor at the Royal College of Art and a designer in the 80s, the exhibition features big names like Vivienne Westwood and John Galliano and celebrates some of the lesser-known designers whose legacy lives on in modern fashion.
It also offers a fascinating perspective into the cyclical nature of fashion.
If you thought your polished, minimal noughties look was a universe away from the 80s, you might just be surprised…
To celebrate the opening, we have some amazing prizes just for you.
One lucky winner will receive:
- A pair of Sarah Angold Sera earrings, Glass Green and radiant with brass, worth £325
- 2 tickets to the Members' Preview of Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the 1980s on Thursday 9 July 2013
- A paperback copy of the exhibition book, 80s Fashion: From Club to Catwalk

NO MATCHES FOUND - What happened next
I’m a celebrity, sort of.
I’ve just moved to rural Wales, and the lady in the newsagent patted me on the arm and told me not to blame myself.
‘Of course, in my day, a girl your age would have been written off years ago, but it’s different these days,’ she said, before ringing up my copy of Horse & Hound.
It all started with eHarmony, one of the most successful and famous dating websites in the world.
I know tons of people who’ve met people through it but I’m shallow and looks matter enormously, so meeting someone based on their personality never appealed. I’d rather be single than wake up to an ugly face.
‘At least try it,’ said my friend who told me I was basically in the last chance saloon dating and mating wise and could not afford to be picky.
The questions they ask you are reassuringly detailed, like they really truly want to get to know every corner and crevice of your Self, in order to sort the wheat from the chavs and find you you’re The One. It takes about an hour.
Then, you press the magic button and wait while they find you a selection of suitable males. Or not, as was the case with me. Instead, I got a page that told me sorry, but there was no one out there for me.
After crying for a short time, I felt a huge sense of relief. Like I’d been given some kind of cosmic permission to call off the search, and it felt good.
So I decided to tell the world about my epiphany. The world being ELLE.
But instead of being happy for me, now everyone, except maybe for the newsagent, wants to prove to me that I am not undatable that I just haven’t (yawn) found the one, yet. Including the people at eHarmony who want me to meet up with dating guru Jenni Trent Hughes.
‘We really want to help you,’ said the lovely lady at eHarmony. ‘But I have a dog and a horse now, I’m OK,’ I told her, and meant it. I even have a badge I wear that says ‘If you want a stable relationship get a horse’. I wear it with pride.
But I still agreed to see Jenni. Because there’s a tiny part of me won’t stop reading Norah Roberts and Danielle Steele, waxing my legs and dreaming about seven foot lumberjacks rescuing me and my dog after we get lost in a dark forest.
If I were a police case, I’d be a ‘cold case’ because all the evidence clearly points to the fact that I am undatable.
It’s pretty irrefutable, especially when you look at what my ex boyfriends had to say about what it was like being with me. And yet, despite all of this, the evidence, it seems that the search is destined to continue.
I feel it’s more likely that the Loch Ness Monster will come out of hiding and say, ‘OK, enough with the tours and the terrible souvenirs, I exist OK?’
But you never know.

ELLE Book Club: Ghana Must Go, Taiye Selasi
Ghana Must Go is the electrifying debut by brilliant newcomer Taiye Selasi. Her unique voice is human and real. Read our review below - and for more ideas for hot reads, check out the May issue of ELLE, out now.
Ghana Must Go is a simple story of family loss, misunderstanding and love, spanning generations and continents. What makes it exceptional is Taiye Selasi's writing - no linguistic pyrotechnics, no self-importance, just characters you long to reach out and hold. No wonder she's been hailed as the new Zadie Smith, with praise from Salman Rsuhie and Toni Morrison.
Born in London to Ghanian and Nigerian parents and raised in the US, Selasi now lives in Rome. She is the new novelist of this year - one who makes the world shrink and shine.

Somerset House Summer Screen Announces First Films

Admittedly summer seems like an impossible mirage right now. But there are reasons to be cheerful: Film4 has announced its line-up for the Summer Screen at Somerset House.
On the billing is the marvellously sardonic Mean Girls, Ken Loach’s immersive debut, Kes, the flamboyant Guys & Dolls and gangster classic The Untouchables. Somerset House will be announcing more films in May.
The annual Summer Screen is an exhilarating, unmissable experience. As well as watching movies projected across an enormous 17 x 8m screen, you can celebrate summer in the city with DJ sessions, food and drink and special live introductions to some of the films. A BBQ in the park just doesn’t sound as glamorous now, does it?
Mean Girls
The film that launched a thousand Tumblrs – all of them are a wan imitation of Tina Fey’s sharp and sometimes brutal depiction of female adolescents. Beware of plastics.
Kes
Ken Loach’s kitchen-sink drama depicting the friendship between a teenage troublemaker and a kestrel he steals from a nest on a farm. The film became a word of mouth hit when it was released in 1970.
Guys & Dolls
Starring Marlon Brando in his rugged heyday, Guys & Dolls is Hollywood at its most golden. Think show-stopping tunes, twinkle-toed dancing and a whole lotta bravado.
The Untouchables
Robert de Niro versus Sean Connery. It’s a battle of wills, words and accents – to the soundtrack of stylish gunfire.
Tickets go on sale May 17

WHO SAID YOUR 20’s ARE MEANT TO BE EASY?
For anyone wondering what the hell their 20s are all about and in need of some inspiration, the April issue of ELLE is here to help.
Our agony aunt Mademoiselle will dispel your fears that life might be passing you by while Dr Meg Jay, author of The Defining Decade will inspire you to dump that guy, quit your job and move cities! Phew.
But if you need a little more help, here are some of our favourite inspirational books to help you navigate your 20s in style:
How to Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran
The award-winning columnist argues for less self-flagellation and more fun in her witty and astute manual for women.
The Best of Everything by Rona Jaffe
The forerunner of Mad Men with a hint of Sex and the City thrown in, this story of three young women trying to make it in New York in 1958 is a must-read.
Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers
This classic self-help book is 25-years-old itself and it’s been round the block once or twice but its advice to face your fears will never get old.
And we’re already eagerly anticipating Girls writer, director and star Lena Dunham’s first book...

DAVID BOWIE IS...DRIVING US TO DISTRACTION
Obsessed with Bowie right now? Here at ELLE, Bowiemania has taken hold.
Today’s fixation? His iconic music videos. Ahead of the first international Bowie retrospective at the V&A we pick the most memorable.
Life On Mars
From the first shot of those out-of-this-world electric blue eyes, we were mesmerised. Watching those languid dance moves is totally hypnotising – and he’s made us rethink blue liner.
Fashion
The irreverent narrative is chopped up with images of Bowie having a laugh on stage with his impossibly cool crew of likely lads. There’s a brand new dance…
Absolute Beginners
Written as the theme tune for the film of the same name, and including shots of the film, <Absolute Beginners> references a classic cigarette advert of the 50s. It’s a monochrome, witching hour adventure around London with splashes of Pleasantville technicolour. Oh and there’s that stare at 0:30.
China Girl
China Girl was written by Iggy Pop and David Bowie during the Berlin years, and shot mainly in Sydney’s Chinatown. Soaring chords, sweeping, romantic shots and a (controversial) romp in the sea.
Rebel Rebel
It’s surreal, intoxicating and utterly ridiculous – and shows exactly why Bowie is the emperor of pop culture.

TO THE MAX
British actor Max Irons, 27, is starring in what’s set to be one of biggest films of the year, The Host. Oh, and the biggest TV series of the year, The White Queen, too.
We thought you might like to get better acquainted with him…
On the rumours about him dating co-star Saorise Ronan…
Well she’s 18 so no, I don’t think so.
On the idea of being an actor for the rest of his life…
It’s quite an unnvering thought. I’ve been away for 9 months of this year and you realise that means you lose contact with friends. Relationships are very difficult and finding a place that you can truly call home is tough.
On living the Hollywood life…
I’ve nothing against LA but I know that I wouldn’t want to live there. It is a movie town, it’s such an unreal existence that it’s important to get out of that. You go to a lot of meetings where people say the nicest things to you in the world. You take it with a pinch of salt but you start to believe it and that’s the really dangerous part - when you start to believe your own hype.
On being quite geeky…
I’m a bit of a dork. I love science. I have really weird obsessions - submarines, spaceships, that kind of thing.
The Host is in cinemas 29 March
