In the South Bank's Royal Festival Hall, in front of the biggest names in books (and underneath a chandelier fashioned from the six shortlisted novels), the winner of the Baileys Womens Prize for Fiction has just been announced.
'Feisty and insightful' judges including Mary Beard, Caitlin Moran and Kate Mosse have spoken.
From 158 books that were in the running and a 20-strong longlist, the winning book was one that made the judges 'talk and think and argue. A book for our time'. It is A Girl is a Half-formed Thing by Eimar McBride.
The emotional author took to the stage to thank her publisher, Faber, and her husband.
'It is a wonderful thing to have my book recognised in this way,' she said. 'We are writers but we are readers first, and the reader is fearless and must not be underestimated.
'It's great that it's a women's prize, because to be a woman is to be fearless too.'
