It's the moment we've all been waiting for – and we can reveal that this year's recipient of The Man Booker Prize is Richard Flanagan for his novel, The Narrow Road to the Deep North.

Every year, the announcement for the winner of the Man Booker Prize is highly anticipated, especially taking into consideration that previous winners have included literary feats from the likes of Eleanor Catton, Hilary Mantel and Arundhati Roy. This year is no different in terms of the superb calibre.

Set throughout one of the darkest periods of Japanese history – during the construction of the World War Two Thailand-Burma 'Death Railway' – Flanagan's story centres on a surgeon who struggles with his own demons amidst the devastating conditions of a POW (Prisoner of War) camp.

Tragic and heartfelt, Flanagan's novel is an evocative exploration of humanity pushed to its breaking point.

A worthy winner indeed.
