Body Shop queen, Anita Roddick dies ages 64

By elleuk elleuk | Posted: Tue 11 Sep 2007

Body Shop founder and green queen Anita Roddick died last night after suffering a major brain hemorrhage. The animal rights, ethical beauty and green campaigner had been suffering from hepatitus C, which she contrated after a blood transfusion in the 1970s. She had only revealled that she was living with the illness last year, but was said to be in great health. Anita, who was made a Dame of the British Empire for her success in business and her charity work, died in a hospital in West Sussex surrounded by her family, husband Gordon and daughters Sam and Justine. Anita spearheaded campaigns against animal testing, to bring organic products to the British high-street, to set up fair trade associations with third world countries and in the fight against AIDS. She was respected and admired by everyone from beauty industry insiders to the head of Greenpeace, and was turning the world green way before the rest of the fashion and beauty industry. Fashion writer and broadcaster Caryn Franklin told us this morning, "She was quiet simply a subversive superstar who created a ground breaking business practice with heartfelt ideals." It's a great loss to the country.
