Nicole Richie models maternity wear for a pea in the pod

Nicole Richie and River Island give maternity wear a make over for autumn.

The list of pregnant supers gets longer by the day – Heidi Klum, Gisele Bundchen, Jourdan Dunn – and while it may not be great news for the September catwalks, the fashion world’s current baby boom has certainly sparked interest in what has traditionally been something of a fashion wilderness – maternity wear.

In the US, Nicole Richie’s hotly anticipated new line for maternity fashion site, a pea in the pod, launches today. If anyone should know a thing about stylish pregnancy style it’s Nicole – the Hollywood star (pictured here at the launch and modelling the new designs) already designs a successful jewellery line, has unquestionably great personal style and is currently pregnant with her second baby. At the launch Nicole said, ‘you really feel like you have to change your whole wardrobe. And that's the last thing a woman wants to go through. So I really tried to make this line to get women excited about wearing clothes.' Expect the collection to feature plenty of her trademark boho tops and maxi dresses. Prices start at £25 (but shipping to the UK is charged).

Meanwhile in the UK, high street giant River Island has just announced its plans to launch maternity wear for autumn 09. So if hippy tops and prints are not your bag, hold out till September, as the range, which promises to be 'styled with attitude' and 'punk inspired' will include great maternity denim, graphic print tees, sequin harem pants and on-trend jumpsuits for price-conscious but fashion-forward mums-to-be.
