Plans revealed for Gap and Oprah's Costume Institute Met Ball

By Laurelle Gilbert | Posted: Tue 08 Sep 2009

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute has revealed it's plans for next year's annual exhibit 'American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity'

This will focus on the way fashion contributed to the evolving identity of American women between 1890 and 1940. Cue a 75 piece vintage fashion exhibition featuring everything from 'The Heiress' to Suffragettes, flappers and screen sirens.

The new exhibit, as always, will also set the theme of next year's Met Ball in May 2010 (one of the highlights of New York's fashion and social calendars) which this year will be co-chaired by Gap's Patrick Robinson and Oprah Winfrey. Last year for the Supermodels themed party Kate Moss and Marc Jacobs co-hosted (pictured.)

Focusing on the American Woman brings the exhibit closer to home, as in recent years themes have spanned the world, visiting everything from Anglomania to French designer Poiret, Coco Chanel and out-of-this-world Superheroes.
