Eighties fashion faux pas making a comeback?
By Lianne Ludlow | Posted: Fri 21 Aug 2009
If Agyness Deyn, Drew Barrymore and Alice Dellal have anything to do with it, those 1980's fashion aberrations we thought time had cast to the darkest corners of its wardrobe, are back. Pod shoes, hair scrunchies, and graffiti-ed Raybans are suddenly on the fashion-pack’s must-wear list.
If you don't remember, Pod’s (along with Kickers) were huge in the 80s but actually never went away, and their collections are still at large, but we suspect Agyness did not find her cute flat Mary-Jane style in their current catalogue, but probably while browsing one of New York's Lower East Side vintage stores. We can envisage Drew Barrymore mulling over buying an ironic 1980s tee in the same downtown thrift store and coming out with her cute Raybans instead. And dare we say, these ladies are pulling them off.
We love Raybans and the graphic print is just right for now, while the cute Pods are a trend we could happily embrace. But, even our patience for ironic fashion starts to fray on site of model Alice Dellal's blast from the past.
Scrunchies, are, are they not, the preserve of tiny tots gym classes and Mike Leigh tarts with hearts? Surely, not even the tongue-ist tongue-in-cheek fashion irony should ever allow them to inhabit the accessory drawers of chic women? Alice Dellal, consider your wrist slapped. However, if you really feel the urge to resurrect the scrunchie get yours from American Apparel.
