Carey wins Gatsby role from Kiera and Scarlett

Mulligan, who beat peers including Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley to the role of a lifetime, will play the careless heiress from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age novel.

And she couldn’t have received word of her triumph in a more dramatic fashion – apparently, Moulin Rouge director Luhrmann called Mulligan just after she arrived at this week’s CFDA Awards in New York, and greeted her with a simple, “Hello, Daisy Buchanan.”

Needless to say, she squealed. Maybe even cried a little. Wouldn’t you?

‘I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world’s most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting,’ Luhrmann said. ‘However… I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her, “Hello, Daisy Buchanan.”’

Mulligan will star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. I know we can’t wait to see what fantasy Luhrmann spins…
