Royal wedding gown raises £10m

Tickets for the palace’s Summer Opening sold out on many days, with queues forming from 6:00AM during the show’s final weekend.

The unprecedented visitor levels (inexact until the completion of a full audit later this year) topple the previous record of 420,000 visitors over 57 days in 1994.

Income from the sale of £17.50 tickets will be directed toward the palace and the care of paintings and artefacts in the Royal Collection. The organisation also plans to make a donation to the royal wedding charitable gift fund in line with Catherine’s wishes.

‘The royal wedding dress display proved to be a massive draw for visitors of all ages and nationalities,’ a spokeswoman for the Royal Collection said. ‘We’ve really enjoyed welcoming visitors from all over the world in record numbers this summer. We’re delighted it’s been such a success.’

Despite public eagerness to view the royal wedding gown, the Alexander McQueen design will return to storage for preservation purposes.
