Z For Zachariah
Picture a post-apocolyptic world inhabited by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Chris Pine playing two men going head-to-head to win the affections of a brave woman, played by The Wolf Of Wall Street’s Margot Robbie (left). Expect survival struggles and plenty of sexual tension.
The Diary Of A Teenage Girl
This coming-of-age movie adapted from Phoebe Gloeckner’s semi-autobiographical book of the same name is a smart exploration of female sexuality, told from the perspective of a 15-year-old girl (played brilliantly by Londoner Bel Powley). Alexander Skarsgard and Kristen Wiig complete the excellent cast.
Mistress America
Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, the indie dream duo who brought us Frances Ha have reunited for this story of a college student (Lola Kirke – sister of Jemima ‘Girls’ Kirke) who is transformed by a new friendship with her soon-to-be stepsister, played by Gerwig. Angsty, complex and delightful.
Last Days In The Desert
Ewan McGregor is both Jesus and the devil in this understated, beautiful film. The cinematography is the work of Emmanuel Lubezki, who was responsible for the immersive screenscapes in Birdman and Gravity.
The End Of The Tour
Jessie Eisenberg takes on the role of Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky, who spent five days interviewing novelist David Foster Wallace during his Infinite Jest book tour. Early consensus suggest this is a game-changing role for Jason Segel, whose job it was to capture Foster Wallace’s genius.
Brooklyn
A sweet romance (adapted from Colm Tóibín’s novel by Nick Hornby) about a young Irish girl who leaves her hometown and her love behind to move to New York City in the 1950s. Saoirse Ronan is as enchanting and convincing as ever in the leading role.
True Story
As the title suggests, True Story is based on real-life events. Jonah Hill plays a disgraced investigative journalist whose identity, remarkably, has been assumed by a murderer (James Franco). An unlikely relationship is formed when the journalist visits the convict in prison.
