Among the furore over Andy Murray’s fiancée Kim Sears caught swearing on camera, you may have missed the news that Murray has defended his decision to train with a female tennis coach.

Critics have slammed him for working with former female number one player, Amelie Mauresmo, but his win against Tomas Berdych for a place in the Australian Open final proves that his choice to train with a woman hasn’t hindered his performance at all. (Which isn’t really a surprise to us.) He spoke out after his semi-final match to say: ‘A lot of people criticised me working with her, and I think so far this week we’ve shown that women can be very good coaches as well.’

‘I’m very thankful for Amelie for doing it. It was I would say a brave choice from her to do it,’ the tennis star added.

Professional sportsmen aren’t usually feminist icons, but the fact Murray is championing women as being just as capable as men is a good step in the right direction for us.
