That moment when you realise you've fully turned into your mother happens to us all.

I’ve just experienced it.

While looking at pictures from the red carpet at the British Fashion Awards – Rosie's plunging ode to Christmas, Jordan's backless black number, Gaga in sheer Tom Ford – all I wanted to know was where were their warm and toasty coats?

Yes, that question our parents so regularly repeated to us as teens when we tried to head out on an arctic night in just a FCUK strappy top and some Lycra slip skirt (just me?) was all that was on my mind.

Now I'm no fashion connoisseur. (In fact, while the fashion world partied all late in to the night with Karl and co, I was at home catching up on the latest episode of Catastrophe with the heating on high.) But staying warm seems like the most stylish thing in the world to me.

And while I understand this is the season to serve some cold shoulder (snaps to ELLE cover star AC for nailing the trend last night) it was an absolutely freezing 5 degrees last night.

When I suggested to my Editor-in-Chief that she and her fellow fashion friends might have been less chilly if they'd rememebered their duffles, she outed me as a 'fashion fool' and told me while coats had an excellent place in fashion, the red carpet was not one of them.

Thankfully one celebrity is with me. Lily Allen wore the bright blue Supreme hooded coat, matching her new blue hair, over her lovely metallic Chanel dress to the BFAs. She broke the the mould, and the cold, and I think she looked fabulous, and probably doesn't now have the flu.

I'm rather hoping the woman who introduced the world to sneakers and prom dresses (remember how aghast we were to that combination?) might be about to start a new trend: coats on the carpet, a trend any mum would certainly approve of.
