Could this be the end of memorable Oscars acceptance speeches?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the body who organise the Oscars, has announced that the traditional list of thank yous will be replaced by a tickertape scoll of preprepared names on our screens.

The aim is to put an end to that awkward moment when some poor emotional winner is abruptly cut off by the orchestra.

But we're worried. Without enough time, will our victorious A-listers have the creative space to deliver dramatic, gratuitous, bizarre, bonkers speeches like these?

Before them become extinct, we celebrate some of our all time favourite Oscar acceptance speeches.

Gwyneth Paltrow - Best Actress for Shakespeare In Love in 1998

Gwyneth’s infamous speech had her weeping into her pink Ralph Lauren gown as she thanked her co-star Joseph Fiennes then shed even more tears for her producers, her agents, her mum, her best friend, her dad and her grandpa!

Colin Firth - Best Actor for The King’s Speech in 2011

Sometimes glitzy award ceremonies can be a bit heavy on the self-congratulation so it was a humble moment when Colin Firth joked that his career “just peaked” while accepting his Best Actor award. Sometimes it just takes a Brit to show them how it’s done.

Julia Roberts - Best Actress for Erin Brockovich in 2001

Julia catapulted herself onto the best-dressed Oscar winners list when she grinned and giggled through her acceptance speech in a dramatic velvet-and-satin vintage Valentino gown.

Halle Berry - Best Actress for Monster’s Ball in 2001

As the first African-American woman to win in the Best Actress category, Halle’s teary acceptance speech was wholly appropriate and had us shedding a tear too. Not only that, she looked incredible in a floral, sheer Elie Saab gown to accept her award.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon - Best Writing (Original Screenplay) for Good Will Hunting in 1997

Long before Bennifer and Bourne, two of our favourite actors actually looked incredibly geeky while accepting their Oscar. The boys will forever have a place in our hearts for bringing their Mum’s as their dates though.
