The votes are in and the Conservative Party has a Commons majority of 12.
The UK will be led by David Cameron for the next five years. Cameron returned to Downing Street following the news that the Conservatives had surpassed the 323 seat count required to govern.
Labour leader Ed Miliband has stepped down following the disappointing results for his party. The big vote swing in Scotland was particularly damaging for the party’s vote count – the Scottish National Party crushed Labour by winning 56 of the 59 seats in Scotland.
In another blow for the Labour party, former Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer Ed Balls lost his seat to the constituency's Conservative representative.
As for the Liberal Democrats – leader Nick Clegg managed to hold on to his seat but has resigned following the catastrophic dive (from 57 to eight) in the number of Lib Deb seats.
UKIP leader Nigel Farage has also stepped down after he failed to win Thanet South – the seat was taken by the Conservatives, who won by 2,800 votes.
In more positive news, the number of women MPs in the UK parliament has risen by about a third.
