Film fans, get ye to a cinema. The adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s bestselling thriller, Gone Girl, is excellent.

All the mystery, perversion, disappointment, farce, violence, betrayal and regret that characterises the novel has been given a bold, big-screen life whilst remaining faithful to its source material.

Thanks be to Gillian Flynn’s screenplay and David Fincher’s expert knack for creating nagging disquiet and convincing audiences to empathise with flawed anti-heroes (see House Of Cards, Se7en, Zodiac).

Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck give sharp performances as the deeply dysfunctional couple, Amy and Nick Dunne, and Neil Patrick Harris is chilling (and darkly comic) as Amy’s creepy ex, Desi Collins.

And what of the ‘new ending’? Rumours of a completely different third act are exaggerated, the ending has been tweaked, but remains delightfully twisted.
