Poor old white bread. The #eatclean movement’s given our favourite carb a really hard time over the last couple of years. And now Marks and Spencer has announced plans to scrap ‘simple white bread’ from its shelves in favour of a way more 2016 ‘fibre-enriched’ alternative.

We can tolerate a lot of things - gluten-free, dairy-free, wheat-free - but we’re not prepared to accept that our shelves are soon to become joy free. Can’t we have basic ‘white’ AND ‘fibre-enriched’? Do we really have to choose?

White bread isn’t cool like its hipster contemporaries, soda bread, rye bread or sourdough but my god it’s good. Egg and soldiers, beans on toast, bacon sarnie, grilled cheese. Ok, we could go on forever but you get the gist.

So can we all agree to take on this cause and champion this humble old faithful? After all, a white loaf is the best things since sliced bread (sorry).
