Kanye West may have said that his staid demeanour in photos is because ‘not smiling makes me smile’, but we’re not so sure he’s telling the whole truth. He has recently said that his reasons for not smiling stem from ‘a book from the 1800s’, and that ‘when you see paintings in an old castle, people are not smiling because it just wouldn’t look cool’, according to reports from the Daily Front Row Los Angeles Fashion Awards.

If that’s what you want to believe, Kanye, sure. But we think this Mark Twain quote is more likely to sum up his reasons: ‘There is nothing more damning to go down to posterity than a silly foolish smile caught and fixed forever.’

Though Twain (and therefore Kanye) has a point, we think there’s a place for ‘silly foolish smiles’ (take note, Cara) – and for Kanye, it seems it just takes the right, er, stimulus (see below image), in order to get him to pull one. And who can argue with that?
