The Duchess of Cambridge's severe morning sickness - a condition known as Hyperemesis Gravidarum, with which she also suffered during her first pregnancy - is yet to abate, forcing her to cancel her planned royal visit to Malta, it has been confirmed this morning.

'The Duchess of Cambridge will no longer visit Malta this weekend. The Duke of Cambridge will undertake the visit instead,' ran the official statement from Clarence House.

'HRH continues to suffer from Hyperemesis Gravidarum. The decision was taken on the advice of doctors.

'The Duke of Cambridge is honoured to represent The Queen on the visit, which commemorates the 50th anniversary of Malta's Independence.'

The two-day trip is scheduled for 20-21 September, and Kate is understood to be disappointed not to be able to go.

Her second pregnancy was confirmed to much excitement (not least in the ELLE office) on 8 September.
