Prick up your ears: Kathleen Zellner, the lawyer representing Steven Avery of Making A Murderer, has announced that she has "new suspects".

Avery is currently serving life for the murder of Teresa Halbach in 2005 – the 25 year old’s remains were found close to Avery’s home, but he’s always denied committing murder.

Zellner is representing 53-year-old Avery in an attempt to overturn the conviction. She’s said in a new interview that the new suspects all knew Halbach.

She told Newsweek "We have a couple. I'd say there's one, leading the pack by a lot. But I don't want to scare him off, I don't want him to run."

The bar for reopening the Avery case is high, she says, as Avery has exhausted all his appeals.

"We have to have new evidence that could not have been obtained before that would result in no juror believing that Steven Avery committed the crime."

Avery’s case shot to fame when the documentary series Making A Murderer premiered on Netflix. After being wrongfully imprisoned for eighteen years for sexual assault, false imprisonment and attempted murder, Avery was released when DNA evidence proved it was another man.

It was only a short while before he was then accused and found guilty of the Halbach murder.

Kathleen Zellner has previously said Avery had an "airtight alibi" for the case.

She claims only details of the incoming and outgoing phone calls were heard during Avery's original trial. What with a Making A Murderer 2 being confirmed, it looks as if the lives of Steven Avery and Brendan Bassey will continue to hold the nation's attention.
