Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, is the nine-years awaited sequel (and, in several parts, prequel) to Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez’s film adaptation of the former’s neo-noir comic series Sin City.

The co-directors have not failed to make the dark follow-up as current today as the original was in 2005 by bringing it to the screen in 3D – this time, viewers are transported into the iconic world of Sin City, feeling every splash of white blood and slice of a sword.

Modern splashes of vibrant colour create a stark contrast to the grisly darkness of Basin City, where the violence is as shocking, and the interweaving storylines, both pre and post-dating Sin City (for there is not one cohesive plot) are as fraught with corruption and lust as the first, with an overarching presence of power and its destruction.

Eva Green gives a stellar – and predominantly naked - performance as Ava, the murderous temptress, who, using the lyrics of a Beyoncé song, is a man’s ‘sweet dream, or a beautiful nightmare’. Another favourite addition to the cast is Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Johnny, who gives an impressive performance as a hotshot gambler, up against unfalteringly evil Senator Roarke (Powers Boothe).

Josh Brolin and Dennis Haysbert also join the returning cast of Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson and Mickey Rourke, among many others. Lady Gaga even makes a guest appearance. It is a truly impressive cast, and though the film is no better than its predecessor, it is definitely worth a watch (after having watched the first again, as a necessary refresher).

Another point to add, Jessica Alba has definitely still got it.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is in cinemas 22 August.
