It's almost time. In a little over a week, Star Wars will release the first chapter of its new Trilogy and as a fan, I can't wait.

Like many good things, the joy is often in the anticipation, but I can't help but feel that my joy is being hijacked as debates around gender bias are beginning to overtake my excitement. Don't get me wrong, diversity in film or otherwise are incredibly high on my agenda, and the recent call for female directors is very promising, but my heart sank when J.J. Abrams said 'Star Wars was always about, you know... it was always a boy’s thing.'

Abrams must have soon regretted that remark, as many women, including a fair few female journalists, have already written to prove him wrong. Yes, not enough women are involved, yes there is room for improvement, but no, Star Wars was/is not just for boys.

I like the drama, the idea behind the force, the sound effects and the hype in the run up to the films release. I am just a girls girl who loves Star Wars and I would like to enjoy the banter and spoofs.

So in honour of the girls and women out there, here's a round up of a few inspirational women who have embraced the farce, erm... force
