What’s the best way to get over someone? Buying a new outfit or a lipstick? Eating ice cream and watching movies?
If you’re Taylor Swift, writing songs about your ex is the way to heal a broken heart. But Olly Murs has criticised her music by saying of her newest track Out Of The Woods, ‘Come on [Taylor], let it go. Write something new that isn't about Harry [Styles].’
Swift’s response to Murs? ‘I think that's a very sexist angle to take. No one says that about Ed Sheeran. No one says it about Bruno Mars. They're all writing songs about their exes, their current girlfriends, their love-life, and no one raises a red flag there.’
And she’s right: men write songs about their exes without coming under fire. Swift points out that she never names her old flames in her songs, so it’s pure speculation. The same can’t be said for Sheeran, who says ‘I’d disappear, you’d call me selfish’ in Nina, about his ex Nina Nesbitt.
With Swift’s lyrics as pointed as ‘We are never, ever, ever getting back together’, perhaps Murs is just feeling sorry for his friend Styles…
