Were you watching The Great British Bake-Off last night? Have you taken a stance on #bingate?

If you weren’t on front of your TV then this is what you missed. The usually serene atmosphere of the GBBO tent was thrown into turmoil as contestants tried to create the perfect Baked Alaska. Iain Watters and his beard were so upset that his ice cream melted before he could cover it with meringue, he threw his unfinished creation away and stormed out of the tent. The result? Instead of a perfect bake, he carried his bin up to the judging table and was ultimately dismissed from the show after Mary Berry declared his under-pressure response unacceptable.

Extra fuel was added to the fire by a spot of canny editing, which appeared to suggest that fellow contestant, Diana Bird, had removed Iain’s ice cream from the freezer, and Twitter promptly erupted with cries of cheating. Presenter Sue Perkins was forced to take to Twitter to say ‘Iain's Alaska was out of the freezer for 40 secs. That's it. No sabotage. 40 secs of normal temp would NOT be enough to reduce it to liquid.’ And Paul Hollywood entered the fray with the ultimate argument-ender, ‘I'm glad Mary's not on twitter this would upset her.. #enoughnow’.
