While women are sometimes told they’re ‘sticking their oar in’ (rude), this weekend’s Oxford versus Cambridge Boat Race marks a big step for equality. The female crews will compete on the same stretch of the River Thames as their male counterparts for the very first time.

In an industry that, like many others, is still very male-dominated, this is a good start, albeit long overdue. Women’s sport gets just 7% of media coverage, while male achievement is regularly over-represented. Even worse than this, just 0.4% of all commercial sponsorship goes to women’s sport.

Which sport will be next? We look forward to seeing women’s football given equal treatment in the media.
