Getting stuck in a mascara rut happens to the best of us. We are, after all, creatures of habit and wiggling our most trusted wand from root to tip each morning becomes something of a ritual and safety blanket. But trust us when we say experimenting with your mascara is one of the easiest ways to freshen up your make-up look, with minimum effort required.

Take inspiration from the ss16 catwalks with these six lash looks.

Look: Dolly Lashes

Spotted at: Marni

Technique: Backstage trendsetter, Tom Pecheux applied individual lash extensions to create this dolly-eyed look. If you find falsies too fiddly or want a more wearable variation, apply a generous coating of mascara and use tweezers to pinch together groups of lashes.

Try: Clinique High Lengths Mascara, £17.50.

Look: XXL Lashes

Spotted at: Giles and Marc Jacobs.

Technique: Purposely clumpy lashes make a make-up statement and instantly draw attention to your eyes. You can make this look pretty (like Giles, left) or grungy (Marc Jacobs, right) depending on your preference. The trick is to start with a lash primer, allow it to dry, and then apply several coats of volumising mascara.

Try: Clinique Lash Building Primer, £13.50, and Chubby Lash Fattening Mascara, £17.50.

Look: Centre Lashes

Spotted at: Mary Katrantzou

Technique: One of the prettiest looks of the season, focusing your mascara on just the middle third of your lashes makes eyes look rounder and bigger. The key here is to use the tip of your mascara wand rather than the length, to wiggle the lashes upwards.

Try: Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara, £13.50.

Look: Undercover Lashes

Spotted at: Victoria Beckham

Technique: A trick favoured by backstage makeup artists when creating a 'no makeup makeup' look is to use brown mascara at the very root of the lashes and leave the lengths bare. This gives the eyes pretty definition without looking noticeably 'done'.

Try: Clinique Lash Power Feathering Mascara in Dark Chocolate, £19.

Look: Eye-Opener Lashes

Spotted at: Balmain

Technique: The aim of the game here is to apply your mascara upwards and NOT outwards. Creating this length on the bottom and top has an elongating effect that makes eyes look instantly bigger.

Try: Clinique High Impact Curling Mascara, £19.

Look: Colour Pop Lashes

Spotted at: Giorgio Armani

Technique: If you want to embrace a bold pop of colour apply your chosen tinted mascara onto a naked lash or, for just a hint of colour, apply over a natural-finish black mascara base.

Try: Clinique Naturally Glossy Mascara, £17.50.
